Old Man Winter has shown many different faces at the farm over the years. We’ve had record snowfall and massive ice storms. We’ve lived through extreme cold and winds that truly chilled us to our bones. Some winters there is no snow at all, and other years we have a beautiful, snow covered landscape around us. But the best winter days are when the brilliant sun shines and the fields sparkle with snow while we enjoy the view from the inside! You can visit “And We Have Snow!” to see some of our snow moving equipment here at the farm.

Today I’m happy to share my new “Crockpot Potato & Hamburger Casserole” recipe, which is a terribly boring name for this dish (the things I do for google search engines!) If I had my way I would have called it “A Big Bowl Of Warm & Cozy.” This dish is packed with incredible flavour and will give you solid warmth that is needed in Canada in January.
Ground beef is mixed with cubed russet potatoes and a variety of other vegetables. Beef broth, powdered gray, onion soup mix and a few spices are added. A wonderful magic happens as the crockpot simmers away. The end result has outstanding flavour and it tastes even better the next day if you have some leftovers. Click on the PDF document above to print or download the recipe file. You can visit “Crockpot Spiced & Herbed Potatoes” for a tasty crockpot side dish. It’s with mixed feelings that we announce that one of our very dedicated delivery drivers is leafing us. (And no, that is not a typo. Read on!) Geoff starting working at our farm just as the world turned upside down with COVID craziness. He stuck through all the challenges that were involved in delivering food while keeping safe and healthy. This is a real testimonial to his work ethic and tenacity.
For 6 years Geoff was the friendly face of our farm as he delivered our product around the GTA. We truly appreciate his dedication to every single one of our customers, his commitment to getting the job done properly and his great care to details. Anyone who has ever talked to Geoff for more than 5 minutes knows that he is a tried & true, die-hard, fanatical Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Every single year he worked here, he’s told us that “THIS WILL BE THE YEAR THE LEAFS WILL WIN THE STANLEY CUP!” And he really, truly believed it every single year…even when his beloved Leafs couldn’t bring home the coveted cup. In a strange twist of fate, he became the sole Mustang here at a farm dominated with Gryphons (a teeny-tiny Western vs Guelph university rivalry that is decades old!) Even though he wears Western purple with pride while we strongly prefer the red and gold of Guelph, Geoff is living proof that Mustangs and Gryphons can coexist happily. We are very excited for Geoff as he moves on to start his own business and we hope he knows he will be sorely missed by all of here at the farm (especially Darren.) We’re looking forward to hearing updates on your new ventures whenever you can spare the time to stop in and say hello. Our door is always open for you! Full time G class driver required for immediate start for a farm in Mount Albert. Approximately 30 hours per week. Daytime hours Tuesday to Friday. Job entails restaurant deliveries, requires excellent customer relations skills and involves some heavy lifting. Knowledge of the GTA is an asset. Clean abstract required. email resume to [email protected] or text name and qualifications to 905-806-3926 No phone calls.
A picture really is worth a thousand words. So here is my 10,000 word summary of 2025 at our farm. This is a quick glance at the farming work we do as the seasons turn, the different crops we grow and the people that we are. The recipes for “Breakfast Twice Baked Potato II”, “Creamy Herbed New Potato Salad” and “Curry Sweet Corn Soup” featured in the photos are available for free on our website, as is my “Feed Your Brain!” cookbook for anyone who is learning how to cook. For more photos and videos I invite you to explore my Common-Tater blog.
