We are seeking a full-time office assistant who would thrive in a fast paced, deadline-oriented work environment at a busy potato farm.  Primary job responsibilities include customer service, basic entries on accounting software, data entry on multiple documents, maintaining various government documents and providing general assistance to the office manager as required.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to remain organized while multi-tasking, flexibility with job duties and willingness to learn new jobs frequently.  The ability to work independently while meeting daily deadlines should be complemented by attention to detail and accuracy.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office is vital, while knowledge of Simply Accounting is beneficial.

Applicants can send their resume to [email protected] or text job qualifications to 905-806-3926.  I invite you to visit “Our Story” to learn more about who we are and the roots of our farm.

New recipe alert just in time for your Easter dinner!  I think Grandma Morton would have approved of my delightful adaption of her famous scalloped potato recipe.  The addition of Dijon mustard and parmesan cheese to her original recipe are a fun twist.  This is a very creamy dish with just a hint of mustard, and it will pair beautifully with your Easter ham.  Oh, and it was taste tested and approved by all the ladies in my book club!

Click on the PDF document above to print or download the recipe file. You can visit “Thompson Scalloped Potatoes” to print or download my original scalloped potato recipe.  Bon Appétit!

So God Made A Farmer

Paul Harvey wrote his famous speech called “So God Made A Farmer” in 1978. His tribute to farmers contains arguably the best-known words ever spoken about agriculture.  This wall hanging is a quote extracted from his speech.  It was given to us by a very dear employee who is no longer with us, Tony Defusco.  It hangs in one of the most used rooms in our house – the mudroom!

Today I reflect on the incredibly perceptive truth of his simple words.  Here we are, all four of us - myself, my husband and my two sons, ready to take on everything to grow another crop of potatoes.  And we can’t wait! Join us this farming season through my social media to learn more about potato farming in Canada, farming in general, and our life here at the farm.  You can visit “Our Story” to learn more about who we are and the roots of Thompson Potato Farm.

Homing Pigeons GPS

Everyone has heard of the Farmer’s Almanac which traditionally predicts the weather for farmers.  But do you know about the “Farmer’s Animal Almanac” which offers farmers ways to utilize animals, insects and even birds to help create best farming practices that are environmentally friendly?  Here is an excellent example of how homing pigeons helped us last year when the GPS in RJ’s tractor broke.  You can see by the track marks in the field that he was turning in circles unsure of which way to go…until the homing pigeons arrived and showed him the way!  Are you questioning any of this yet?!

This photo was supposed to be a part of a series of interesting ariel views of our tractors and farming equipment, until the pigeons photobombed my photo shoot.  Of course, this created an entirely different kind of interesting photo.  Thank you for reading along with me and Happy April Fool’s Day to you! You can visit “Animal Potatoes” for another fun April Fool’s Day joke.
