The Common-Tater
|
My Common-Tater blog has gone to print! The April edition of The Bulletin newspaper contains an article I wrote with some information that the average person may not know about potatoes and potato farming. It’s rather exciting to have my name with a headshot and a byline and everything in the local paper! Here’s hoping it’s a big hit and I can write another article another time. You can visit “BJ’s Christmas Parka Story” to see a story I wrote for the Bulletin that has nothing to do with potatoes and everything to do my most vivid childhood memory of Christmas.

One of the least known phenomenon’s of The Great Potato Famine in Ireland was the discolouration of potatoes. The potatoes turned pastel shades of pink, blue, purple and green over the winter. As there was nothing wrong with the potatoes other than their odd appearance, one small farm in Ireland created baskets of these pastel potatoes to share with community members in need. Wishing to remain anonymous, they packed the potatoes in brightly coloured baskets and placed them around their town. And so began a tradition that morphed into our modern day Easter tradition of hiding chocolate eggs wrapped in brightly coloured tinfoil.
Having any second thoughts about what you’re reading right now? The Easter Bunny has absolutely nothing to do with pastel potatoes or The Great Potato Famine in Ireland! Thank you for reading along with me and Happy April Fool’s Day to you! You can visit “Homing Pigeons GPS” for another fun April Fool’s Day joke. |
