The Common-Tater
If you had to work all weekend, wouldn’t you like to be here? It was a beautiful weekend for the potato harvest. We pushed hard to get as many loads as we could into the storage while the weather cooperated. If you look carefully, you can see the potato harvester at the very end of the field. You can visit “The Hypnotic Harvester” to see a video of the potato harvester in action.

Fall is in the air! Our beautiful, homegrown orange and white pumpkins are ready and waiting for you. Stop in at our farm stand and choose from a wide selection of pumpkins for your fall décor. Good things grow in Ontario! You can visit “At The Door” for directions to our farm.
I have to admit that I usually wait for perfect weather to take videos and pictures to create blog posts. After all, who doesn’t love blue skies and sunshine? However, one of my good friends from university recently mentioned that it’s interesting how the sun always shines at our farm. So, here’s a video montage of some absolutely miserable, horrible weather that we experienced here at the farm. We are not immune from late April snowstorms, wicked winds and torrential rain downpours. This one’s for you Duane! You can visit “A River Runs Through It" and “Stormy Father’s Day” to see how weather has impacted our crops in previous years.
Join us as we continue to celebrate the season of “fummer” here at the farm! This rare season occurs when the weather conditions are perfect for our produce stand to be fully stocked with the finest produce that’s available during both summer and fall. Our sweet corn, mini new potatoes and Ontario field tomatoes continue to be in season, and we are happy to offer beautiful, homegrown orange and white pumpkins. You can visit “At The Door” for directions to our farm.

Here’s a great fall recipe if you’re looking for something a bit different to do with our sweet corn. My recipe for homemade smoky creamed corn takes about 15 minutes to make, and it’s so much tastier than canned cream corn. Start by frying smoky bacon, add the kernels from a few fresh cobs of sweet corn, and cook gently with heavy cream. Blend the cooked corn to your desired consistency, add parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh parsley. And voila! An amazing side dish that’s guaranteed to impress.
Our September sweet corn can be the best of the season, and it looks like the corn will be available for a few more weeks. Come and get it while you still can! Click on the PDF document above to print or download the recipe file. If you would like tips on how to freeze sweet corn as well as links to more of my original recipes that call for sweet corn, you can visit “Freezing Sweet Corn.” Bon Appétit! |
