We welcomed fall here at the farm with the start of the potato harvest last weekend with some of the nicest weather imaginable. We never know who’s going to show up to help us. It could be Noah learning how to fly my drone or Paisley getting her first driving lesson. As we work to get the crop into the storages for the winter, these are the small things that matter to us. And by the way, every drone video in this clip was taken by Noah and Paisley was a star steering the Kubota! You can visit “#potatoharvest24” to see a close up video of our harvester in action.

I named these novelty potatoes “Papas Moradas” which means “purple potatoes” in Spanish. The splash of purple is a fun addition to your dinner plate. They are very flavourful, and there is no need to peel them. And what can you cook with Papas Moradas? It turns out that they are very versatile so you can cook pretty much anything you want! The video shows roasted potatoes cooked by my sister-in-law Angie and loaded fries created by Cook Rob at The Belvedere Cookhouse. I stuck with making a simple baked potato and a potato salad chock full of fresh herbs.
Papas Moradas will be available at our farm stand for a limited time this fall. You can visit “At The Door” to see all the fall produce we have available, including our homegrown pumpkins. Every industry has its ups and downs. This year farmers in Southern Ontario were slammed with some of the most difficult growing conditions in over 20 years caused by extreme heat and drought. We were lucky to be able to water some of our crops, but irrigation has many drawbacks. Irrigation is hard work, it runs 24 hours a day for 7 days a week, it’s expensive and we cannot irrigate all of our crops.
As farmers face the daunting task of trying to salvage what managed to survive this summer, please do us a favour. When you see our slow-moving, bulky equipment on the road, why not give us a friendly smile and a wave? It would go a long way to boosting our spirits as we work to feed families worldwide. You can visit “#potatoharvest24” to see a great video of our potato harvester from my drone point of view. What better way to celebrate the Labour Day long weekend than with a closer look at all the dedicated and hardworking people who work at our farm? Our reliable employees help with picking sweet corn, packing potatoes, stocking the produce stand, delivering our products and extending customer care in the office (all under the watchful eyes of our attentive farm dogs, Riley & Riggs.) We couldn’t do what we do without all their help! Be sure to give them a friendly wave when you see their smiling faces! Enjoy this unofficial last day of summer wherever you are, and we’ll catch you on the flip side of summer as our fall produce begins to come into season. You can visit “Our Dedicated Employees” to learn even more about our fantastic staff.
