Let’s talk about teamwork on day six of Ontario Agriculture Week. Moving the potato crop from the field to the winter storage requires constant communication between the tractor drivers in the field and the crew at the farm. John and R.J. run the potato windrower and potato harvester in the field. Curtis keeps the potato bin filler moving the crop from the bulk trucks into the storages at the farm. All day long our text stream is full of chatter about who needs a truck to fill, who’s moving to what field, and who needs tools to fix a breakdown. Good thing we all have a good data plan! You can visit “The Faces Of Our Farm” to see a video of everyone working together to bring in the crop.

A quick overview of how our potatoes get from the field into our winter storage on day five of Ontario Agriculture Week. You can visit the “Videos” category in The Common-Tater blog to see all kinds of videos taken here at the farm.
I present “Arts & Crafts at Thompson Potato Farm” for day four of Ontario Agriculture Week. Our mini pumpkins are the perfect size for your Thanksgiving table décor. These decorations were super simple to make. I just hollowed out a mini pumpkin, added some faux leaves and a tall candle. You can visit “At The Door” for our fall hours of operation and directions to our farm.
And now for something completely different as we continue to celebrate the bounty of local food grown in Ontario during Ontario Agriculture Week. If you feel like adding an element of unusual to your Thanksgiving dinner, why not try turning some of my purple potatoes into a vibrant mashed potato dish? Or how about serving a little known but very tasty spaghetti squash? John & Curtis grew some incredibly unique pumpkins this year that will really make a splash with your fall décor. They grew warty pumpkins, striped pumpkins and even rose coloured pumpkins. All this and more is waiting for you at our farm stand! You can visit “Spaghetti Squash” to download or print my original recipes for cooking this amazing squash.
As we continue to celebrate the bounty of local food available during Ontario Agriculture Week, I invite you to stop into our farm over the next few days. We’ll get you stocked up on all the vegetables you need to impress your Thanksgiving dinner guests. We have 10lb bags of white potatoes, yellow potatoes and cooking onions available. The farm stand is stocked with a large selection of butternut squash & pepper squash, as well as a fabulous choice of homegrown orange pumpkins for your décor. You can visit “Cooking Potatoes 101’, “Roasted Root Vegetables” and “Pepper Squash” to download or print my original recipes for cooking these vegetables.
