The Common-Tater

What do farmers do in January? I’m asked this question rather often, so I prepared this collage of the 4 of us working hard at playing. RJ is developing his engineering career; Curtis pursues a new interest in watercolour painting, and I am busy perfecting the fine art of cuddling. And as for John, he seems to be the only one of us with real energy as he attends truck school to attain his AZ license. Of course, while we definitely enjoy a quieter time at the farm, we are still busy packing and delivering our potatoes to our customers and unbelievably already ramping up for the 2025 growing season. You can visit “The Faces Of Our Farm 2024” to see a video of all of us hard at work during the fall harvest.

Happy holidays from our family to yours! We appreciate every single one of our customers, and there sure are a lot of you! Whether you own a restaurant, purchase our product for your grocery store, visit our stalls at The Ontario Food Terminal for your wholesale business or drop in to the farm to buy potatoes and sweet corn, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you. Ring in the New Year safely, happily and surrounded by your loved ones. Catch you in 2025! You can visit “Our Story” to learn more about who we are and the product that we stand behind.
Murray knows just how to handle the cold days of February. All you need is a cozy spot to sleep, a friend to commiserate with and a view of your kingdom. Then you can dream of spring while the snow flies outside. I think we can all learn a lesson from this little farm dog whether we are embracing Canada’s winter wonderland or planning forward to warmer days. You can visit “Tater Tales: Murray Loves Winter” to see how our farm dog keeps busy during the winter months.
Whether you embrace it or evade it, whether you enjoy it or hide from it, whether you love it or hate it, winter is here in southern Ontario. Last night the temperature dropped to a rather chilly -15C with some light snow. We woke up this morning to a stunning display of crystallized snow sparkling in the brilliant sunshine. Even though I was supposed to be doing accounting, I couldn’t resist grabbing my camera and heading out into the frigid temperatures for a quick photo shoot. You can visit “Weedy Wednesday” to see some more photos of winter here at the farm in 2019.
Sing along everyone. I know you all know this classic song:
To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time to every purpose under heaven A time to plant A time to reap We use our tractors in every season and have implements for every purpose imaginable. Here are our tractors hard at work preparing our land for planting as they pull implements such as the fertilizer spreader, disc harrow, cultivator and manure spreader. The heavy duty tractors pull the large potato harvester and the smaller windrower during the harvest. And sometimes we even allow a special guest to tag along with the drivers to provide some company during the very long summer days! To see videos of these machines at work you can visit “Tater Tales Potato Planter” and “The Potato Harvester.” |
