Potatoes Do What?!

This is a photo of a coaster that I received as a Christmas gift this year.  I immediately began thinking of all the possible uses for the humble potato.

We all know potatoes are turned into North American’s most beloved foods: fries and chips! We also know potatoes can be mashed, baked and boiled; they can be steamed, fried and turned into a salad; they can be cooked on the BBQ and on the campfire.  But this coaster hints towards all the other uses of this most versatile vegetable.

Potatoes can be used to make vodka, create original craft stamps and generate power.  You can use potatoes to reduce fogging on your glasses, remove rust from your household and garden tools and clean silverware.  Potatoes are used in first aid to soothe burns, in beauty to help get rid of dark circles under your eyes and in personal hygiene when they are turned into soap.

So what are you waiting for?! Grab a bag of spuds from your local grocery store and start investigating the wonders of the potato.  If you would like to see more fun and interesting facts about potatoes you can visit “Spud Smarts – About Potatoes.”

International Women's Day 2023

“Thank you for calling Thompson Potato Farm.  Christina speaking.” Today we celebrate the woman behind the voice on the phone.  Although Christina doesn’t drive the tractors (yet) and she self-admittedly can kill a plant just by looking at it, she is an integral part of our team here at the farm.

She is the first contact all our customers have at the farm but she is so much more than a friendly and helpful voice on the phone.  She is our Health & Safety representative, holds a valid First Aid Certificate and works hard to keep our 19 first aid boxes fully stocked.  She helps with all aspects of the accounting, deals with copious amounts of paperwork for food safety and our temporary foreign workers, and is always willing to learn and try new things.

Christina is a cooking enthusiast who makes a wicked cheesecake and offers valuable ideas when I have her taste test new recipes for the website.  She is a capable driver helping out whenever we need to get vehicles in for servicing.  She is the default IT department for all our iPhones.  She remade all our sweet corn and pumpkins signs using her crafty side.  And most importantly, she keeps us organized with constant reminders of all the things we asked her to remind us we are supposed to be doing!

Christina is valued every day by all of here at the farm, not just on International Women’s Day.  If you would like to see more about women in agriculture, you can visit “International Women’s Day 2021”.

The Weeds Of Our Farm

Thoughts of spring are beginning to turn in our minds as we flip the calendar to the month of March.  As we envision our fields full of beautiful plants, one thought is running through our minds: WEED CONTROL!

Weed control is an essential part of farming.  Every year we learn more about weed control using best farming practices.  Some weeds are difficult to manage, hard to control and impossible to eradicate.  These weeds can look stunning, but they can do real damage to our crops.

The four weeds in these photos in order of appearance are:
Jimsonweed which is highly toxic when touched or ingested.
Bindweed which flourishes in our lawns and fields.
Thistles that line the edges of our fields and cause #IamMurray great grief.
Black Bindweed which has completely strangled the potato plant in the picture.

You can visit “The Flowers Of Our Farm” to see some gorgeous flowers on our crops.
